NEW COURSE: SKETCHING CHARLOTTESVILLE!

McGuffey Art Center, Charlottesville, VA
Starts Saturday, April 22nd or 29th@ 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. for 5 weeks … we will skip Saturday April 29th.)                                   Let’s combine the best of the new Urban Sketching and Travel Sketching movements with some of the best parts of “Plein-Air” sketching tradition in this five week class. We will begin by using the Starnes (McGuffey) classroom and, when weather permits, sketch in/or around downtown Charlottesville (… students can borrow a portable easel for these excursions if they wish). Quick pencil studies and loose ink line+ink wash sketches will be our starting points but we will also try several color sketching strategies as well. For color, students will have a choice of using pastels, water-soluable pencils/leads/crayons, and colored inks, gouache, or watercolor. The course is designed to be suitable for beginner to advanced students with some previous experience in drawing (or painting).                                                                 Tuition: $175 ($150 for seniors)

NEW COURSE: WORKING IN MIXED MEDIA … Drawing/Painting

Starts Monday, March 27 @ 1:00 – 4:00 pm, for 5 weeks  March 27 – April 24, 2017

We will begin an exploration of the combining of multiple dry and wet/moist media to create drawings or paintings. Starts Wednesday, April 12th @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, for 8 weeks
Would your drawings, painting, and collage work be easier to work on in a studio with large tables and easels? … all in a well lit studio with great northern light? Could your projects benefit from a little discussion or some helpful critiques? Come join me and aa small group of supportive fellow artists working in the wonderful Crozet Art studio. Summer Session WATERCOLOR: BASICS & BEYOND

McGuffey Art Center, Charlottesville, VA
Starts Tuesday, June 13th @ 6:30 – 9:00 pm, for 8 weeks
Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced students will discover and explore traditional and contemporary techniques for working with watercolor. Beginning students will learn how to use basic watercolor techniques to create their own paintings. More experienced painters will get a chance enrich their work with ever more challenging projects or with experimental approaches to transparent water color (including the use of other aqueous media such as watercolor crayons, gouache, acrylic, or to combine them) There will be lots of demos and feedback to aid each student achieve their goals in the class. Tuition: $275 ($225 for seniors)

Let’s explore the use of watercolor as a sketching medium in this short five week class. We will begin by working in the studio and then, if weather permits, include some”en-plein-air” work. Besides exploring traditional “pencil + watercolor” sketches, we will learn to use watercolor (color and/or value) alone … and experiment with watercolor pencils/crayons too. For beginners to advanced students who have at least a little experience with drawing or painting.                                                                        Tuition: $175 ($150 for seniors)

NEW COURSE: MIXED MEDIA DRAWING

Starts Monday, July  10 @ 6:30 – 4:00 pm, for 5 weeks  March 27 – April 24, 2017

Adults and Mature Teens (Rising 9th Graders+) will begin an exploration of the strategies used in mixed media drawings. Starting with Traditional “traditional” strategies, we will branch out to experiment with contemporary use of dry materials mixed with inks and other liquid media. Drawing For Teens: Working Large & Bold                              

Location: Starnes classroom, McGuffey Art Center

Monday, June 19th to Friday, June 23rd @ 1:00-4:00pm, High School and mature Middle School (rising 8th grade) teens will explore contemporary large format and/or un-expected material strategies as well as traditional wet and/or dry media techniques for creating potentially surprising drawings. The instructor, an AP studio art judge and the senior art judge for the North Carolina Governors Schools, has 30 years experience both as a college drawing instructor and working with HS age students. (This may be a good class for students wanting to create a piece for college and scholarship art/design portfolios.) Tuition covers all supplies NEEDED for the class except a small sketchpad. Tuition: $179
